Over the past five years, Tropenbos International has worked with IUCN NL and WWF-NL to support inclusive, climate-resilient economies in forest frontier areas, as part of the Mobilising More for Climate (MoMo4C) programme.
Within targeted landscapes across the forested tropics, we brought together small-scale forest and farm producers, companies, investors, governments and civil society organizations to develop sustainable business solutions. The goal: to unlock sustainable economic opportunities that mitigate climate change and strengthen climate resilience.
We started by identifying climate drivers, impacts and business opportunities at the landscape level. Then we worked with local actors to improve enabling conditions, co-develop business cases and link initiatives to public and private investors.
Now, as the programme wraps up, the results are becoming visible. Farmers are reviving traditional agroforestry systems. Others are turning agricultural waste into new income streams. And across the board, smallholders are gaining better access to finance and markets for sustainable products.
Looking ahead, these experiences offer valuable lessons for future efforts. They show the importance of long-term, locally tailored support to unlock the potential of small-scale forest and farm producers in frontier landscapes.
