However, few integrated landscape initiatives have had access to the finance needed to achieve their goals. There is a clear mismatch between the supply side of private “impact investors” and the demand side of sustainable land-use investments on the ground.

Community forestry has the potential to contribute to sustainable livelihoods for people living in and near forests. However, it is not uncommon that a large part of the benefits of collectively managed forests end up in the pockets of local elites. Civil society organizations (CSOs) therefore support communities to strengthen their internal governance processes and promote equitable benefit sharing. This raises complex questions, such as: Who decides what is fair? And how do new governance structures relate to customary decision making?

Launched in 2007 by the African Union, the Great Green Wall initiative was to create a new ‘wonder of the world’. This was intended to be a belt of trees 7000 km long and 15 km wide, across eleven Saharan countries from Dakar to Djibouti, visable from space, with a 2030 target of restoring 100 million hectares. It would help to stop desertification, improve the lives of some of the poorest people on the planet, and contribute to Africa’s fight against climate change.

Under the historic Paris Agreement of 2015, nearly 200 countries committed to limiting global warming to 1.5 to 2 degrees °C above pre-industrial levels. The agreement also included a long-term goal to increase countries’ ability to adapt to adverse impacts of climate change. Moreover, the parties agreed that richer countries would provide climate finance to help poorer countries with achieving their climate targets.
